How to pick a New Drive for your ASUS computer ?

Before you start the upgrade, you need to decide between the traditional mechanical Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or a Solid State Drive (SSD). Each has its advantages and considerations.

Choosing Between HDD and SSD

SSDs are faster than HDDs because they lack moving parts. They excel in loading your operating system, applications, and media files quickly. Additionally, they occupy less physical space and consume less battery power.

However, HDDs are typically more affordable, especially when it comes to larger storage capacities. They are an excellent choice if you need several terabytes of storage at a budget-friendly price.

Combining HDD and SSD

If your PC can accommodate both types of drives, it's recommended to use a combination of SSD for your operating system, applications, and essential files and an HDD for storage. This setup offers both speed and ample storage capacity.

Consider the Physical Size

The physical size of your hard drive is crucial, whether you're installing an HDD or SSD:

• Desktop Hard Drives: Typically, desktops can fit 2.5" or 3.5" drives, and many can accommodate multiple drives.
• Laptop Hard Drives: Laptops usually use 2.5" drives, but thicker drives might not fit in slim laptops. Some SSDs may require a mounting bracket depending on your setup.

M.2 Expansion Slot

If your PC has an M.2 expension slot, you can take advantage of an M.2 SSD.

For laptops, the process is a bit different. You'll need a USB-based SATA adapter or enclosure to connect both drives simultaneously. Fortunately, there are kits and applications available to assist you with this procedure.

Alternatively, consider a clean install to eliminate clutter and enhance performance.
This process involves reinstalling your OS and software, which can be quicker and cleaner than transferring your OS.

Remember to back up all of your personal files so that you can restore them later.

Installing your new drive in a Laptop

1. Before You Start

1. Make sure your laptop is unplugged to ensure safety
2. To avoid static electricity, remember to ground yourself before handling any electronic components.

2. Getting Started

1. Identify Your Laptop Model: Every laptop model is different but most of them have their hard drives accessible from the bottom.
2. Some laptops have an easy-to-open hatch that requires just a single hex screw to access.
3. However, others may need you to remove the entire bottom case or even the keyboard.
4. To find the specifics for your laptop model, consult the schematics and specifications.
5. Prepare the Laptop: Disconnect the laptop's battery. In many cases, you'll need to remove the battery to access the drive connector.

3. Removing the Old Hard Drive

1. Start by finding the hard drive, usually held in place by a caddy with screws. Carefully remove these screws to release the old hard drive.
2. Disconnect the old hard drive from the SATA connector by gently pulling it straight out.
3. If there's a bracket or caddy housing the old drive, remove it to prepare for the new drive.

4. Installing the New Drive

1. Attach the bracket or caddy from the old drive to the new one for secure placement.
2. Insert the new drive into the SATA connector with precision, ensuring a snug fit.
3. Secure the new drive in place by using screws to affix it to the frame for a stable installation.
4. Finally, firmly reattach the laptop's cover or hatch to complete the process.

Installing your new drive in a Desktop PC

1. Before You Start

1. Turn off your computer and ground yourself to avoid static electricity. Disconnect all cables from your peripherals (like monitors, keyboards, etc.)
2. Let your computer cool down for a bit.

2. Getting Started

1. Stand your PC upright, and check if it's easier to access the drive from the side.
2. Open your PC's case. Usually, you'll remove a side or top panel. Use a Philips screwdriver, and be careful not to lose the screws.
3. Check if you can use the existing SATA cable for your new drive. If not, you'll need a new one.
4. Locate the power supply and find a free SATA power connection.

3. Removing the Old Hard Drive (if needed)

1. Unplug the data and power cables from the old drive.
2. Some cables might have clips you need to squeeze. Leave these cables for the new drive
3. If the old drive is in a caddy held by screws, remove those screws.
4. Set the old drive aside.

4. Installing the New Drive

1. Put the new drive into a caddy
2. Reverse the process: attach the caddy and secure the new drive with screws
3. Plug in the cables to the new drive.

5. Keeping the Old Drive and Adding a New One

1. You'll need an extra caddy and more cables.
2. Mount the new drive with its caddy in an open slot, usually below the old drive.
3. Plug the SATA cable (data) into the new drive and connect the other end to the motherboard.
4. The slots are usually on the motherboard's side closest to the front of the PC.
5. Connect the SATA power cable from the power supply to the new drive.
6. If there's no free SATA power connector, you'll need an adapter, splitter, or a new SATA power cable.

6. Final Check

1. Make sure all cables are connected correctly.
2. Ensure cables aren't blocking fans or touching the heatsink.
3. Confirm the hard drives are securely fastened.

7. Now, reassemble your computer and turn it on.
